[Recipe:] Sata Andagi (Okinawan Doughnuts)

Sata AndagiFor those who have watched episode 21 of the popular anime series, Azumanga Daioh, this phrase might seem familiar to you: “Sata Andagi! Sata Andagi!”

What she is referring to is the Sata Andagi that she is holding in her hands, while Tomo is yelling at Osaka, “Okashi?!” (A snack? Candy?)

For those who might want to try to make these Okinawan confection, I’ve found a recipe at http://www2.rpa.net/~joeroa/andagi.htm that might just do the trick. I haven’t tried this myself, but I’d thought that I would share this knowlege with you!

Sata Andagi (Okinawan Doughnuts)

  1. Salad oil for deep frying
  2. 4 eggs
  3. 3/4 cup milk
  4. 3/4 teaspoon vanilla
  5. 4 cups flour
  6. 2 cups sugar
  7. 3 1/2 tablespoons baking powder
  8. 1/4 teaspoon salt

In a skillet, heat oil to 350°F. In a large bowl, beat eggs, milk, and vanilla. Sift flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add to egg mixture; stir until dry ingredients are moistened and dough is smooth. Drop teaspoonfuls of dough into the hot oil; fry until golden brown and doughnuts rise to the surface. Makes 4 dozen.
